Hi All (an update from J.J.'s Dad),
We heard from J.J. on Monday, 8 September. He said the past Saturday night the A.P.'s showed up with two beds and a folding table with two chairs. So they now have some furniture in their little apartment. He also said they got running hot water. So he is happy he said, as they now have "real beds"!
J.J. is teaching a lot. He and his companion also gave a Priesthood blessing. He is in a walking area, walking up and down all day long. He is in a "real hilly area". He promises to send photos soon... He says the kids are way cute and want to shake his hand and say hello to him all the time.
He was able to take some recent converts to the LDS Visitors Center. The LDS Temple is next door. But it is under renovation now. It was an hour ride by bus and a 20 minute van taxi )called a Combi that cost 6 pesos to ride) from his place to the Visitors Center. He said it was a "fun experience".
Next Monday is Independence Day for Mexico. It will be a huge holiday he says. He is looking forward to the holiday and to see what happens.
His companion is from a southern city in Mexico called Wahaka. He is 20 years old and goes home from his mission in February. His companion has been a member since he was 15 and is from a part member family.
We are tyring to pinpoint where he is located. He says "maybe an hour or two" from the city center. That tells us a lot - not! He doesn't know as they take a subway, taxi and a Combi to get to downtown. He has no real idea where he is. But he did finally state he is in a city called Naucalpan with a zip code of 53790. So that narrows it down some...
I went to Google Earth (what amazing tools we have nowadays!?) and found where he is living. I know have SOME idea where my son is staying. Makes me feel more peaceful. According to Google Earth, Naucalpan is just outside the city limits of Mexico City - a suburb city that is very close to the western mountains - just northwest of Mexico City.
He says he doesn't usually eat breakfast. The main meal of the day is the one from the members around 2:00 PM. Then if they get hungry in the evening, they buy some "tacos or something". He has plenty of pesos now, so he can buy food when he gets hungry. I guess the first week he had NO pesos. That was our mistake I guess. We should have sent him with some pesos!
He said there is "lots of hard work" and "things are going great here". He says the "time is going by quickly" since he has been in Mexico for two weeks now.
No baptism dates set yet, but they are planning some in the next week or two. He teaches a lot but said they haven't taught the same family more than once yet. He says he is "learning a lot still but can only understand like one third of what people say. But the Spanish is coming along well.
He wants to let everyone know he is:
"thankful for all your love and support".
